Songs were often used in order to teach children the names of the surrounding creatures and exercise their memory. The structure of such songs would many a time include lists enumerating numbers, actions and mainly names of animals. Onomatopoeias imitating sounds made by animals are frequently used: a cock’s crow, a donkey’s bray, and so on, because they are more expressive than any explanation.
