This song was sung on Candlemas Day. Village children, boys and girls, used to sing it after mass.

The blessed candles were lit, and the children went round door to door asking for alms.

These versions are from the Gernika area in Bizkaia. The custom was for children to sing one of these ancient rhyming couplets now and again in their exit round. Here follow some slightly different stanzas used for the occasion.
